Do you need a door closer for your digital lock?

How controlled closing can reduce slamming, and why the correct fitting and final latching speed matter.

A digital lock does not control how hard the door closes. A suitable door closer can help manage that movement, especially on heavy entrance doors or doors affected by wind.

What a door closer does

A closer returns an opened door towards the frame at a controlled speed. Depending on the model, the main closing speed and final latching speed can be adjusted separately. This can reduce the hard impacts caused by an uncontrolled door while allowing the latch to engage.

Why it matters for a digital lock

Repeated slamming can put stress on the lock fittings and door hardware. Controlled closing is a useful preventative measure, but it cannot guarantee the lifespan of the lock or fix internal electronic faults. A closer also cannot correct a bolt that is catching on a misaligned strike plate.

Choose the closer to suit the door

The door’s width, weight, mounting arrangement and exposure to wind matter. A unit that is too weak may fail to latch the door; an unsuitable or poorly adjusted unit may make opening difficult or still allow slamming. Have the door, hinges, lock and frame checked together before choosing a closer.

Check the last part of the closing movement

The aim is a controlled close followed by positive latching. Too little final closing force can leave the door unsecured. Test normal closing and confirm that the latch and lock engage without having to push, pull or lift the door. Keep fingers clear of the closing edge.

Already have a closer, but the door still slams?

Arrange an inspection if the closing speed suddenly changes, oil appears around the closer, the arm becomes loose or the door stops latching reliably. Do not remove adjustment screws or dismantle a hydraulic closer. Adjustments should follow the exact model’s instructions.

For a fire-rated or shared entrance door, use compatible hardware and preserve the door’s required self-closing and latching function. Do not disable the closer or wedge the door open as a workaround.

Check alignment before replacing the lock

If the door only locks when pulled tightly towards you, the issue may involve alignment rather than the digital lock alone. Send us photos of the door, lock, frame and any existing closer so we can assess the likely work. You can also read our everyday lock-care checklist.
